DHL's Gateway

An Investment of €4 Million by DHL Express Indicating Their Trust in Turkey

In the current period when many enterprises are ceasing their investments or laying off their workers due to the crisis creating worldwide effects, the international logistics and express transportation company DHL Express made an investment of €4 million in Turkey. In the Gateway (the new operation facilities), established by DHL Express in an area falling within the boundaries of the Gate B of Istanbul Ataturk Airport, 10 airplane containers will simultaneously be both loaded and unloaded thanks to the moveable conveyor support with a total length of 55 meters.

While DHL was cutting jobs in America, DHL Turkey keeps on investing. This is why I don’t let myself down. I hope that I will get the job despite everything.

The Name DHL and DHL History

The name DHL comes from the first letters of the last names of the three company founders, Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn.

In 1969, just months after the world had marvelled at Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon, the three partners took another small step that would have a profound impact on the way the world does business. The founders began to personally ship papers by airplane from San Francisco to Honolulu, beginning customs clearance of the ship's cargo before the actual arrival of the ship and dramatically reducing waiting time in the harbour.Customers stood to save a fortune.

With this concept, a new industry was born: international air express, the rapid delivery of documents and shipments by airplane. The DHL Network continued to grow at an incredible pace. The company expanded westward from Hawaii into the Far East and Pacific Rim, then the Middle East, Africa and Europe. By 1988, DHL was already present in 170 countries and had 16,000 employees.

Deutsche Post World Net and DHL

At the beginning of 2002, Deutsche Post World Net became the major shareholder in DHL. By the end of 2002, DHL was 100% owned by Deutsche Post World Net.In 2003, Deutsche Post World Net consolidated all of its express and logistics activities into one single brand, DHL. The DHL brand was further strengthened by Deutsche Post World Net's acquisition of Exel in December 2005. The DHL expertise is pooled from a number of companies acquired by Deutsche Post World Net. The companies are;

Exel: at the time Deutsche Post World Net acquired Exel in December 2005, it had around 111,000 employees in 135 countries. Exel primarily offers transport and logistics solutions for key customers.

Deutsche Post Euro Express: in operation since 1997 through internal growth and investments in leading European companies, network for parcel and express services in more than 20 countries, market leader for business customers in Europe.

Danzas: founded in 1815, based in Basel, Switzerland, acquired byDeutsche Post World Net in 2000, world leader in air freight and ranked second in ocean freight. Overland transport and supply chain management complete the Danzas service portfolio.

Air Express International: largest American air freight provider, integrated into the Danzas group in 2001.

DHL to cut 9,500 U.S. jobs

I mentioned how I am unlucky in one of my previous posts. While I was expecting to be hired and work for DHL, the damn global financial crisis popped up. I was mistaken., even though I pointed out in my research (which I will talk about it later) that the logistics sector was not affected by the previous financial crisis in all over the world,

According to CNN report, Global delivery company DHL announced Monday that it was cutting 9,500 jobs as it discontinues air and ground operations within the United States.

"DHL said its DHL Express unit will continue to operate between the United States and other nations. But the company said it was dropping "domestic-only" air and ground services within the United States by Jan. 30 "to minimize future uncertainties." .DHL spokespersons said the cuts would take place nationwide and will not be concentrated in any one location.

"We see [a] significant shortfall in the U.S. part of our express business due to the fact that the economy has weakened deeply," said Frank Appel, chief executive of DHL's parent company Deutsche Post World Net. "We have taken a massive action in the U.S."

The company also said it was shutting down all ground hubs and reducing the number of its U.S. stations to 103 from 412.

DHL said it was making the cuts to improve profitability and "to prepare the company for the economic challenges ahead."

The company said this latest action would add $1.9 billion to its restructuring costs, for a total of $3.8 billion over two years, most of it during 2008. The company said the cuts would reduce the annual operating costs of DHL's U.S. unit to less than $1 billion, from its current cost of $5.4 billion."

Up to now, there is no negative news about DHL Turkey and job cuts in Turkey, so I am still hoping to get the job. All I have is “Hope” right now and I know that “Hope” did not kill Barack Obama.
